Limited Edition Sumatra

PERMANENTLY OUT OF STOCK

Working in the coffee business, we sometimes taste a cup of coffee which is just jaw dropping good. Recently, we discovered the value of a good Sumatra. We couldn’t achieve this type of coffee in Peru. Unfortunately the soil type and climate is different so our adventures led us elsewhere. Indonesia! A pure Indonesian Sumatra that is unblended in comparison to the stuff you can get here in the states is almost impossible to come by. A truly pure Sumatra is achieved through a cycle of less than 30,00 lbs of coffee a year. You will see knock off “blends” from companies like Starbucks. You will see blends which claim to be Sumatras in your grocery store. You will see coffees roasted with the same process to achieve a Sumatra flavor. However…….. No such coffees are 100% pure.

My friend and business partner spent some time in the Kalamantan province riding his bike this year and it was here that he found a local farmer growing this coffee on a small farm that was no bigger than 5 acres by his estimation. Since shipping was a problem, the coffee was purchased on the spot and literally shipped by two airline approved cargo cases from Indonesia to the states. To preserve a really great flavor, the coffee was roasted by a friend here in Colorado who has a small batch wood fired roaster in the mountains. We did this to attempt to retain the flavor that is synonymous with domestic practices in Indonesia, even opting to use a slow burning green wood that is similar to jungle type trees found locally. As a result of some trial and error, we were able to recreate the same process to deliver a quality that is close to the same level which was experienced in Indonesia first hand. This allowed us to produce 119 pounds of pure Sumatra roasted as close as possible with the same process.

We thought about cutting this coffee to make a blend but it is just too damn good. We find ourselves paying into the Free Wheel Coffee account to personally drink this coffee. On that note, we concluded that it would be like killing a unicorn if we were to do such a thing as making a blend. So the decision stuck and for this reason, the availability is very limited. As with all Free Wheel Coffee flavors, we always stick to quality and this project has had no exception.

This coffee was also roasted in the inspiration to commemorate the USGP Fort Collins CUP which will be held November 13-14, 2010. We love cyclocross and it only seemed fitting to combine such an amazing quality coffee with such a great sport. If you have never raced cyclocross, we encourage you to try it. Not only is it a great workout but it is also quite liberating to just ride your bike all over the place. You can find out more the USGP Fort Collins Homepage.

We will have some small samples of the Muddy Spoke Sumatra for sampling at the Fort Collins Cup. Get yours today because once it is gone, there is no telling when our adventures will logistically grant us the opportunity to snag more of this amazing coffee.
